If you live in Auckland city and have a labrador named Jess, you’re not alone.
Jess is the most popular name among the 20,000 dogs that call Auckland city home, with almost 400 of them sharing the name, according to statistics from the Auckland City Council’s database of registered dogs.
Close runners-up in the name stakes are Max, Bella, Jack, Molly and Oscar.
Then there’s the ones that prefer to stand out from the crowd, including Spud the Magnificent, Berlios Rotunda Fancy Pup, and Coco Parnell.
The figures also show the most popular breed in the city is a labrador.
There are more than 1600 labradors in the city, and another 1300 labrador cross dogs.
The next most popular breeds are staffordshire terrier cross, jack russell terrier, golden retriever, german shepherd and poodle.
The Auckland City Council has released the statistics to remind dog owners they have until Friday to register their dogs at the early rate and to enter a draw for one of five $200 Westfield vouchers.
After Friday owners will have to pay the higher registration fee and risk receiving a $300 fine.
Registration fees differ depending on the class of dog, whether it is neutered or spayed and whether the owner holds a dog owner licence.
For more information and to register your dog go to www.aucklandcity.govt.nz or call 309-2020.
