Hundreds of Auckland school kids had the chance to compete and dance alongside Valerie Adams today.

The Olympic gold medal winner was the guest of honour at Get Set Go, a programme run by Athletics New Zealand at Eden Park.

She led more than 400 primary school students in a dance aerobic warm up, which included testing her Gangnam Style dance skills, before participants had two hours of games and activities.

Schools were invited to send a team of Active Achievers, all from years one to three, to take part in the event.

The students had all achieved something special through being active, such as increases in confidence, making new friends and learning new skills.

"The whole idea is to get the kids going, moving and keeping healthy and exercising, and this is a great initiative," said Adams.

"I'm just happy to be part of it, happy to be in the country when it's on."

As well as the chance to have their photo taken with Adams, the students were also able to learn how to shot put from the best.

But every time she meets kids, Adams says the questions are often the same.

"They all go 'oh you're tall' and then they get freaked out about the medal.

"But I actually want people to touch it, hold it, feel it - just enjoy it. It's just here on the grass, hanging out."
