Auckland's run of fine weather has ended but should return by Waitangi Day.
MetService analysts said the city was set for occasional rain today, with a high of 26 degrees Celsius and low of 19C overnight.
Heavy showers ease would ease off tomorrow, with a high of 25C and an overnight low of 13C.
Hamilton was also in store for rain today, with a 26C high and a 17C overnight low.
The MetService said it expected showers to clear slowly tomorrow.
Rain was forecast to develop in Wellington, as well as a strong, gusty northerly. The MetService said the capital was set for a temperature high of 23C and an overnight low of 12C.
Thunder and rain would also hit Christchurch today, with a temperature high of 26C and an overnight low of 9C.
Showers and fine spells were expected tomorrow, with a temperature high of 16C and an overnight low of 10C.
Dunedin was also set for rain and showers today, with a high of 19C and low of 10C.
The temperature is expected to cool off slightly tomorrow, but there will be more patches of fine weather.
The MetService has weather warnings in place for the ranges of northern Fiordland and Westland, Otago Lakes, western Nelson and Mount Taranaki.
The weather analysts expected 80mm of rain to fall today.
The MetService warned water levels in streams and rivers may rise rapidly.
