It was a match-up of the heavy-weights in round 17 of rugby league's Appliance Shed Fox Memorial Shield as the Marist Saints and the Papakura Sea Eagles went head-to-head.

A quiet opening stanza exploded in the 24th minute when Andrew Sau ran through the Marist defence, flattening four defenders before eventually being dragged down metres short.

But from there it was an easy catch and pass try out wide for the Sea Eagles and with the conversion successful it was 6-0 to Papakura.

The Sea Eagles finished off the half with a bang, Soloman Smith easing through to make it 10-2 at halftime.

Marist managed to get on the board early in the second half when Misi Ma'u went in after a Sea Eagles' mistake saw him regather and run 50 metres to score untouched.

On the 60-minute mark Peter Savelio grabbed the Saints' second making it 18-14 Sea Eagles with five to go. With time ticking down, the Sea Eagles managed to wrap it up through dynamic fullback George Edwards, winning it for Papakura 24-14.

Two rounds remaining and the Northcote Tigers held a two-point advantage going into their game with the Bay Roskill Vikings. But the Vikings have shown enough this season to say that it is not yet over.

A perfect start for the Vikings had Sione Niuvao cross and with a successful Pariti Matiu conversion it was an early lead to Bay Roskill.

Five minutes later the day got even better for the Vikings, Andrew Tuise got on the end of a Chris Perenara bomb and made his way under the sticks to make it 10-0.

Finally, Northcote managed to find a way through the Bay Roskill defence and after much confusion as to whether the ball was grounded, the Tigers were awarded the try.

Coming out after the break we witnessed a near-perfect opening 10 minutes from the Vikings. Putting pin point kicks behind the Tigers' line eventually led to a Lamese West try and allowed the Vikings to extend their lead.

Northcote continued to pound away at the Vikings' line and managed to pull back two late tries.

But it was not enough and the Vikings managed to grab a valuable win, downing the Tigers 38-34.

ROUND 17 RESULTS Bay Roskill Vikings 38 (22) v 34 (12) Northcote Tigers Papakura Sea Eagles 24 (10) v 14 (2) Marist Saints
