Crafters are being called on to help make 5000 poppies in time for Anzac Day 2015.

The efforts of keen crocheters, knitters and felters will help form a tribute to commemorate 100 years since the Anzac Gallipoli landing.

The 5000 Poppies Project recognises men and women who've served in all wars, conflicts and peacekeeping operations.

It was started by Lynn Berry in Melbourne and New Zealand co-ordinator Lisa Wallace hopes the display will be on show at the Auckland War Memorial Museum.

"I found this project and thought it was a fantastic idea," she says.

"I talked to Lynn and she was keen for us to be a satellite group and make our own poppies."

Poppies flowered in the spring of 1915 on the battlefields of Belgium, France and Gallipoli and have since become symbols of loss in war and hope for those left behind.

The exact museum location for the display is still to be confirmed but Mrs Wallace hopes the poppies will be stitched together and draped down a wall to look like a waterfall. She has created 50 crocheted poppies so far and each one took about half an hour to make.

Family and friends have added another 150.

"This project has a lot of meaning," she says.

"The first two poppies I ever made were for my grandfathers."

The group's Facebook page now has 104 likes from people who've pledged to create more poppies.

"It's becoming quite mind-boggling that people have got behind it and want to be involved."

Poppies must be between 10cm and 14cm in diameter.

See 5000poppies.wordpress. com for poppy patterns and more details of the project or email Lisa at walest@jafa.net.nz.

Poppies can be posted to Lisa Wallace at 22i Mead St, Avondale, 1026.
