Arrest warrant for homeless man's death
Police are looking for a man in connection with the killing of homeless man Maqbool Hussain.
The 49-year-old was found dead in a temporary squat on Halston Rd, Balmoral, on March 24. He appears to have been beaten to death, police say.
On Monday police announced they had a warrant to arrest Justin Vance Turner.
Maqbool was originally from Pakistan and came to New Zealand in 1992. He lived in Mt Roskill with his daughter and wife and worked as a taxi driver.
"He belonged to good and well-to-do family in Pakistan. He was very kind to everyone but sometime become angry," Pakistan Association of New Zealand president Athar Awan says.
"People in our community tried to help him many times but they failed every time."
Hussain was found dead by relatives who would take him food every few days, according to police.
"People still associated with him. He chose to live on the street," Detective Inspector Chris Cahill says.
Mr Hussain was farewelled at a funeral on Wednesday. His adult daughter returned from Australia to participate in the ceremony.
