About Us
In 1963 Suburban Newspapers bought up a string of small community newspapers including the Mt Albert Enterprise, the Roskill Times, Onehunga News, Pt Chevalier News and the Mt Eden News and merged them into one title. Thus, the Central Leader, aimed primarily at tapping into the advertising potential of the new St Lukes mall, was born.
Originally delivered on a Wednesday, a Saturday edition of the paper was introduced in 1991, which later became a Friday edition to come into line with the other papers in the Suburban Newspapers family.
The Central Leader is delivered to close to 53,000 homes from Onehunga and Epsom in the south, Blockhouse Bay and New Windsor in the west, Mt Roskill and Mt Eden in the north and Greenlane and Penrose in the east and boasts a readership of 103,000. It is a hugely diverse and vibrant community with a range of ethnicities, ages, and socio-economic groups represented.
While producing a newspaper to appeal to our range of readers is a huge challenge, it's one that we take seriously and is a testament to the numerous awards the paper and its reporters have won in its 46 year history.
The Central Leader offices are also home to the Auckland City Harbour News and its dedicated team of reporters and photographer work across both titles. Our stories focus on the great achievements of those living in our area, as well as highlighting issues that affect and concern them. We cover everything from the quirky to the serious, but are always mindful of four main principles - stories have to be relevant to our readers as well as being fair, accurate and balanced.
Jeff Clayton, sales manager
Having spent the last 20 years in media advertising sales and working closely with a wide range of businesses from local retailers to corporate, FMCG giants and ad agencies I must admit I've had to learn a thing or two about advertising. I was a retailer of musical instruments when I discovered, first hand, the real significance of advertising and was easily lured into the world of desk top publishing. Other media experience soon followed including working with magazines, direct response mail, outdoor media, television and, of course, newspapers.
What I particularly like about the community newspapers is the way they are positioned to really help businesses, at all levels, to reach their target markets. It's a simple equation:
Our papers have been distributed to every home in their respective areas for many years
and are considered to be an integral and trusted part of the community. With a total of 12 titles covering the greater Auckland area Fairfax Suburban Newspapers provide unmatched market saturation. No one else comes close!
It's a privilege to be associated with these outstanding publications.
Melanie Louden, Editor
I did a Bachelor of Communication Studies at AUT and joined Suburban Newspapers in 1999 where I moved up the ranks from reporter to chief reporter before becoming an editor in 2007.
In August 2011 I was appointed editor at the Central Leader and now lead a talented team - a chief reporter, three reporters and a photographer.
I love working in community news and enjoy being able to bring our readers news about what is happening in their backyard and information about issues that affect them.
We report the controversial and debatable topics, while celebrating the small, the big and the outstanding.
