A bible believed to date back to 1680 is being auctioned off as part of a 24-hour book fair.

The 17th annual Great Auckland Bargain Book Fair is on from noon Saturday to noon Sunday at the ASB Stadium on Kohimarama Rd and will feature thousands of books.

Stadium manager and Great Auckland Bargain Book Fair committee treasurer Murray Ashcroft says the Bible was donated to the fair and was found among a pile of books.

The first few pages reveal hand-written records of a number of births, deaths and marriages.

Mr Ashcroft says more than 1200 boxes, containing more than 60,000 books, have been donated in the past 12 months.

The event is run with the help of the Tamaki Lions and stadium clubs East City Futsal Indoor Soccer, Sparta Volleyball and Basketball Auckland.

The clubs provide volunteers who staff and restock the tables.

Money raised goes to the clubs involved and the Lions put the funds towards various projects.

Mr Ashcroft says the fair is so popular that people queue up for hours before the doors open.

"It’s a dog fight," he says.
