'Not funny or clever'

What is believed to be a random act of vandalism will result in a repair job that will cost ratepayers about $10,000.
About 30 magnolia trees along Stonefields Ave in Mt Wellington had branches snapped on the night of October 21.
Auckland City Council says although the damage appears to be minimal, each tree must be replaced at a cost of $280, plus labour.
Once the central branch is broken the trees will start to grow outwards rather than upwards, the council says.
Councillor and arts, culture and recreation committee chairman Greg Moyle says the situation is bizarre.
"It's just an irresponsible and incomprehensible act of vandalism - why would somebody do that?
"What point were they trying to prove, what's the benefit in doing it? It's neither funny or clever."
Mr Moyle would like to find out who did this and give them the bill.
"I could go out and snap a tree but what would posses me to do it," he says.
"This is the sort of thing people probably brag about and tell their mates about."
The row of trees were planted two years ago as part of the Stonefield's development.
They will be replaced next year by new two to two-and-a-half metre trees.

I usually pass over the occasional wrong choice of word, mis-spellings, etc. but feel compelled to comment on a word in 'Out with the Old' concerning St Heliers fire station. I think the word your columnist was looking for was 'auxiliary'. Onviously an unfamiliar word, but reference to a dictionary would have helped.
