Fashion boon for young designer
She's only 17 but Lillian Chueh has some pretty big dreams.
By the age of 30 she'd like to have her own clothing store. It probably won't be in New Zealand - she'd like to study fashion in New York and build her brand from there.
The former Remuera Primary student is in her final year at ACG Senior College. Last year she won the people's choice award in the Sylvia Park Off the Rack fashion design competition.
Her prize package included an $8000 tertiary scholarship, which she has been using on various short courses to give her a headstart towards her training.
Next year she's thinking of going to Whitecliffe College of Arts & Design to study fashion.
"I'm not really interested in any of the academic subjects but I'm OK at the arts. Fashion is something I like doing."
She is one of the finalists in the Newmarket Young Fashion Designer Awards. Their entries are on display at 254 Broadway until Friday.
Her design is inspired by fashion label Sass & Bide, which was started in Australia by two women with no real fashion training. Their work has become a hit on the runways of New York and London.
"I'm really into their style. I like geometric shapes, black and white and the structure. I'm not really into anything plain. I like stuff to be unique, with embellishments, not just plain fabric," Miss Chueh says.
Now in its fourth year the competition showcases designers aged 16 to 19, giving them a gateway into the fashion industry.
"I think it's definitely worth doing. It gives students the opportunity to show their talent.
"It's really helpful for your CV and portfolio for getting into university," Miss Chueh says.
The winner will be announced at an awards ceremony on October 12 at the Centennial Theatre in Epsom.
