A group of thieves jemmied an entire cigarette cabinet from its stand in a petrol station then drove away with it on the roof of their car.
Police want the publics help to find the four men who broke into the Caltex station on Abbots Way in Remuera, around midnight on Tuesday the 15th of January.
Senior sergeant Hirone Waretini from Mt Wellington police said the group drove up to the forecourt and parked their blue Subaru station wagon outside.
One man acted as a look out while the other three smashed a large window at the front of the station and entered the business. All four were wearing hoodies and masks, most likely balaclavas, Waretini said.
Once inside, the men jemmied the entire cigarette cabinet off its mounts and tried to load it into the boot of their car. When it didn't fit, they instead slid it onto the roof and without securing it, drove down Abbots way towards Lunn Ave, holding it.
"This would have been quite a sight to see for any motorist whom these miscreants drove up behind, stopped next to at lights or passed en route to their ultimate destination," Waretini said.
Police are seeking anyone in the St John's or Mt Wellington area around midnight on Tuesday who might have seen what happened.
Waretini said the incident was similar to another burglary before New Years when a group of men broke into a Z station and also made straight for the cigarette cabinet.
In that case, however, the cabinet had a prevention mechanism and the intruders were unable to get inside. Waretini said it was difficult to know if it was the same group. In the first instance, the men had used bolt cutters instead of attempting to remove the entire cabinet.
