Auckland police are searching for the driver of a car, seen running away from a crash that killed a passenger.
LATEST: The fatal crash happened around 2.30am in Ngapipi Rd, in the suburb of Orakei.
It appeared the car had come to rest in the driveway of a house after becoming airborne, hitting trees and a fence, Inspector Willie Taylor said.
The dead man was impaled on a fence.
A taxi driver and his passengers, who witnessed the accident, saw the driver of the crashed car "run off down the road", Taylor said.
Ngapipi Rd was closed between Orakei Rd and Tamaki Dr overnight but has now re-opened.
Two people were also critically injured in a separate accident on Tamaki Dr overnight.
The car crashed into the trees in Okahu Bay. Police are investigating.
