Hundreds have turned up at Parnell's Holy Trinity Cathedral to honour Nelson Mandela.
Guests started arriving before 11am for the memorial service which began at 12pm.
Among the guests are Auckland Mayor Len Brown, MP Phil Goff, Lady June Hillary, the South African High Commissioner and senior police staff.
Mandela embodied many of the multicultural values present in Auckland, Mayor Len Brown said.
"It's a critical day for Auckland, Nelson Mandela is and always will be a friend of Auckland."
Dean of Holy Trinity Cathedral reverend Jo Kelly-Moore said Mandela's life and message was shared across the international community and the community is mourning.
"Cathedrals across history have been places of community gathering across faiths and cultures. We're proud to host the service"
