You can do anything with number eight wire but not many appreciate its artistic potential.
Aaron McConchie did, and it won him this year’s $4000 National Agricultural Fieldays number eight wire art award.
His sculpture is a series of cylindrical pods using number eight wire shaped around and incorporating sound.
"The works are quite container like, with speakers imbedded in them."
The audio ranges from mechanical sounds to conversations about ingenious Kiwis.
The award is famous for its unique entries.
"I’m a city boy and was intrigued by the history of number eight wire," he says.
The sculpture can be seen in the Artspost exhibition at Waikato Museum until June 29. For other work by the artist go to www.aaronmcconchie.com.
