The recently held Watties Cans Film Festival resulted in more than 36,000 cans of food being donated to the Salvation Army in exchange for free movie tickets.
Salvation Army major Jeff Winterburn says far more cans were received "than we ever envisaged in this tight economic climate".
"It is a great boost to our food stocks and, along with the other support we receive, will ensure that the Salvation Army is able to make Christmas a little easier for those in need."
