Cultural diversity is celebrated at a local Islamic and Arabic play group.
Marhaba, a Muslim play group operating out of Anchorage Park Community House in Pakuranga, caters for children aged six months to 12 years.
With a total of 12 different ethnic groups attending, chairwoman Hoda El Walili says diversity helps children grow spiritually and socially.
Islam is their guiding principle and although they speak in English, the Arabic language is a large part of the curriculum.
"Every ethnic group have their own flavour and Marhaba is a melting pot for all of them.
"Together they form a wonderful community group.
"We would like to guide our children to become good and true Muslims, developing an excellent character, and achieving the best results academically and increasing their spirituality in the modern world," she says.
Children have opportunities to play and learn through drama, creative play, books, language experiences, physical activities, and manipulative play.
All staff are volunteers, as they are a not-for-profit organisation, and they encourage parent participation. The only fee is $30 per term, to cover venue hiring, educational materials and resources.
East Tamaki resident Fazilat Qureshi, came to New Zealand from Fiji in 1998, and her two daughters Zoya, 5, and Zara, 2, both attend Marhaba.
She says they learn a lot through mixing with other Muslims, and both girls' confidence has grown.
"They learn through play, and in just one term, Zara has learnt her Arabic colours, counting up to 10, and the alphabet."
All cultures are welcome at Marhaba, 16 Swan Cres, Pakuranga.
