Houses recognised The Howick and Pakuranga Community Houses achieved third place at the recent Auckland Regional Council Sustainability Awards.
It was a hard-fought competition, with 70 entries in the beyond recycling community category.
Their finals berth was cemented by various successful projects, including Manukau's first sustainable living programme.
Community house manager Sandy Ryan was delighted with the outcome and the recognition it gave to the tutors involved.
The competition winner was the Waitakere Gardens Retirement Village.$12,000 for eye unitThe Howick Lions Club donated $12,000 to the Counties Manukau ophthalmology department from funds raised from the Alexandra Park fireworks display last year.
The money will go towards two hand-held microscopes to allow easier eye examinations for patients in wheelchairs, in beds, those with arthritis, and children.
Ophthalmology clinical director Anmar Abdul-Rahman says the Howick Lions are long-term supporters of eye health services in the Counties Manukau region.
