Skateboarders won't be able to jump or slide on the final addition to the $600,000 skatepark in Flat Bush.

A supervisor is set to oversee the Barry Curtis Park site for two years from the scheduled opening in May.

Manukau City Council's policy and activities committee meeting recently recommended that $60,000 be included in the annual plan for the 2010/2011 year for a skatepark supervisor. They also supported an extension of the contract for another year.

The idea stemmed from the success of a similar initiative at the Otara skatepark. In a report to the meeting, community advisory services manager Brya Taylor says the reputation of the "quality and comprehensive" service came through in community feedback.

"Supervision, advice and training was provided to all ages of skatepark users, parents and the wider community of Otara," says the report.

If councillors endorse the plan at this month's full council meeting then skatepark users will have an "on the spot" person who would take on the role of "caretaker, adviser, programme planner and coach".

The report says a supervisor would maximise the park's use by providing access to all ages and skill levels, a safe, attractive and well-maintained facility, skills coaching as well as skateboard competitions and demonstrations. It would also be a "benchmark" for future skateparks
