The Mission Heights playground is proving a magnet for children after the addition of a long scary slide that councillor Michael Williams has advocated for.

"I first saw a long scary slide at Victoria Park in the Port Hills in Christchurch.

"They had all manner of playground equipment but all my kids wanted to do was play on the slide. It was fast and it was scary. I decided that Botany should have one too," says Mr Williams.

Now Manukau City Council staff have installed one at Mission Heights, funded by the Botany Community Board.

The playground also has a flying fox and other unique features.

"I would like to continue to develop our local playgrounds to a higher standard. It is so important to get kids outside running around.

" The slide is great for fitness because it has 34 steps, the equivalent of three storeys, to climb to get back up to the slide again," the Botany-Clevedon councillor says.
