Devouring cupcakes can be done in the name of a good cause.
Animal lovers are being called upon to utilise their baking skills to raise money for the SPCA.
They are encouraged to bake a batch for Cupcake Day on August 30 and donate money raised from selling them at schools or workplaces
Workplaces can also hold their own competition to judge the best cupcakes and the SPCA is offering prizes for those that raise the most money and for the most creative morsels.
They will also be selling about 5000 of the treats on the streets.
Marketing manager Martin Mackenzie says the event raised about $50,000 for the Auckland shelter last year.
Funds raised this year will go towards buying an adoption van to get the SPCA into other suburbs of Auckland.
He says overseas the vans have been able to rehome significantly more animals.
The van can also be used as an educational tool at schools and events. It would cost about $80,000 plus running costs of $50,000 a year.
Go to www.spcacupcakeday.co.nz to register by August 20 and for decorating ideas.
