Three men with firearms entered a restaurant and ordered about 20 people to lie on to the ground.
The aggravated robbery happened at Valentines restaurant in Pakuranga on Saturday just after 9pm, Detective Senior Sergeant Al Symonds says.
"Three offenders entered the premises. They all had firearms and they corralled up to about 20 people, got them on the ground."
Mr Symonds says people's wallets were among items stolen.
No shots were fired and nobody was hurt in the incident.
The men made off in a stolen silver Nissan Bluebird FEE781 which was found a short time later on Kentigern Close near the restaurant.
