The cause of a blaze that gutted part of a suburban house is being investigated.
A neighbour called 111 when he heard an alarm and saw smoke pouring out the side of the Spears Rd house in Botany Downs at about 12.40pm on Tuesday.
The man, who didn't want to be named, says he first banged on doors to see if anyone was home before cutting off the power and grabbing the garden hose to fight the fire.
"At first it was all right. I could get reasonably close," he says.
"But then it started breaking through the windows and that's when more oxygen went in and it got real hot, real fast."
Howick fire station officer John Taylor says the upstairs bedroom was "fully involved" when firefighters arrived.
"We had to break a ranchslider to get in as there was no-one home."
Mr Taylor says a fire investigator is examining the cause. The damage is mainly to the upstairs bedroom, ensuite and walk-in wardrobe, with smoke damage to the stairwell.
Firefighters also had to climb up the roof. ‘We were lifting the tiles off as it had got in the roof void and there was a bit of stuff stored up there."
