An elderly man who fell into the water has the Maraetai Coastguard to thank for saving his life.
The crew attended a callout at Chamberlains Bay on Ponui Island near Waiheke Island on Monday evening.
The man's companion jumped into save him but they quickly found themselves in trouble. He also experienced heart problems.
Maraetai Coastguard spokesman John Webber says the rescue effort was supported by nearby boaties who assisted until the unit arrived.
The man was transported to Auckland City Hospital by the Westpac Rescue Helicopter after the coastguard dropped them off at the beach.
Mr Webber says the man was in a critical condition but he has since improved and thanked the crew for their lifesaving work.
