New pipes for Panmure
The main wastewater pipe servicing the eastern suburbs is being urgently replaced to prevent a sewage spill in the Panmure Basin.
Watercare project manager Mohamed Imtiaz says the old wastewater pipe, built in 1964, is in poor condition and reaching the end of its useful life.
He asks motorists for understanding while Lagoon Drive has been reduced to only one lane each way until June.
"Please allow additional travel time if you live in or travel through the area," he says.
"We apologise for any inconvenience these works may cause and thank you for your patience and support as we upgrade and secure Auckland's wastewater services."
Contractors Pipeline & Civil will return to Lagoon Drive later this year near the Panmure Bridge to undertake further work.
In the $9.5 million project 2 kilometres of new pipe will be laid from the Pakuranga pump station at Millen Ave to the eastern interceptor under Bill McKinlay Park in Panmure.
The new pipes will also move the sewage from under a number of Pakuranga homes to public land.
The entire project is expected to be completed by December.
Mr Imtiaz says Watercare and its contractors are aware the pipe runs through areas of considerable historical interest, particularly by the Panmure Basin.
Local iwi have been consulted and an archaeologist is inspecting the site as work progresses, looking for items of significance like artefacts and bones. Nothing has yet been found.
The pump station moves the wastewater of 80,000 people who live from Pakuranga to Shelly Park until it drops into the eastern interceptor under Bill McKinlay Park.
Different techniques are being used for different stages of the pipeline replacement.
A tunnel boring machine will pipe-jack 300 metres of concrete pipe under Cleary Rd at a depth of between 5m and 12m.
From there along Lagoon Dr to the Panmure Bridge 15m lengths of polyethylene pipe will be laid in a trench 8m deep.
Existing pipe will be used under the bridge.
Direction drilling will mostly be used along Pakuranga Rd and Millen Ave to the pump station.
