A scheme linking students to trade training and service industries will debut at Southern Cross Campus in Mangere next year.

The first Trades Academy aims to address the need for qualified tradespeople and skilled professionals.

The government plans to launch at least five such academies before 2011, providing education for students who want practical hands-on learning experiences and careers in applied technology.

Education Minister Anne Tolley says the initiative builds on existing successful programmes while giving students more flexibility.

"School remains the best place for young people to get their education. But we all realise that traditional study may not necessarily be relevant for all students.

"Putting trades back in schools is about getting more young people interested in school and achieving more while they are there."

The Trades Academy will combine classroom work with practical experience using an existing work experience programme for year 12, 13 and 14 students.

Campus director Robin Staples says the school has identified opportunities in local industries.

"In accepting our proposal the ministry has acknowledged we are ideally placed, geographically and organisationally to provide the kind of specialised trades education that’s vital for this community."

Senior school director Warren Waetford says the academy will benefit students and the community.

"This is an excellent opportunity to promote self-worth among our young people and I anticipate they will provide a boost to the skilled labour force in the future."
