Eleven candidates are in the running for the Manukau mayoralty.
Whoever wins will be the fourth mayor in Manukau's history.
Sir Barry Curtis confirmed earlier this month he wouldn't be seeking a ninth term and will be stepping down after 24 years.
The mayoral election is shaping to be just as close a battle as 2004 when seven candidates fought it out.
Sitting councillors Dick Quax, Arthur Anae and David Collings are standing for mayor this year, as is former councillor Len Brown and Auckland Regional councillor Craig Little.
Other mayoral candidates are Kelvyn Alp, Baskaran Appu, John Harvey, Willie Jackson, Annie King and Paul Pavletich.
A total of 219 nominations were received for mayoral, council, community board, district health board and Wiri Licensing Trust elections.
Sitting councillors Pulotu Arthur Solomon, Noel Burnside and Jan Sinclair won?t be seeking Manukau council positions. Voting papers will be sent to eligible voters by post from September 21.
The voting period is three weeks from September 21 to noon, October 13.
