Bob Kerridge is crazy about cupcakes.

The SPCA executive director says he doesn't play favourites and will "happily chomp my way through any flavour".

He's loosening his belt in anticipation of the SPCA's annual Cupcake Day fundraiser, next Monday.

"I always finish up at the end of Cupcake Day twice the size that I was at the beginning," he says.

Registration for the fundraiser is now open and individuals, businesses, schools and teams are encouraged to sign up at spcacupcake day.co.nz.

In 2011 more than 2000 people registered for the event, which sees participants around the country baking and selling cupcakes to raise money for the SPCA.

A whopping $234,000 was raised nationally and Mr Kerridge estimates the Auckland figure was around $100,000.

"We're talking mass production. Some of the kids involved make up to 100 cupcakes," he says.

Participants can decorate their cupcakes however they like and prizes for the most creative cupcake, as well as the most cupcakes baked and money raised, are up for grabs.

"I've seen frogs, scary cupcakes and cupcakes that are so tall they almost topple over," Mr Kerridge says.

"Cupcake Day is a chance for everyone to get involved, have a lot of fun and raise a lot of money for the animals."

Registration for Cupcake Day is open until August 27 at spcacupcakeday.co.nz.
