Positive about South Auckland
A software developer is using his skills to change negative stereotypes about South Auckland.
Southaucklandischoice.com is the brainchild of Papatoetoe man James Espie who says he's fed up with his home turf getting a bad rap.
His website might be in its infancy but it's already built up a hotlist of the area's finest from Olympians to destinations and events.
"There were two or three days in a row where there was some pretty negative stuff being said about South Auckland," Mr Espie says. "I got a bit irritated and thought: ‘I'm not having this' and decided to do something."
And it's only the beginning says the former Papatoetoe High School student who has started a Facebook page by the same name and Twitter account SthAKLisChoice.
"My goal is to get to 100 great things about South Auckland. They could be places, events, people or anything really. One a week, maybe more if I get time."
Mr Espie was initially motivated by 50 Shades of South Auckland, an online spoof of the 2012 bestseller, and says the response has been extremely positive overall. Among his Twitter followers are some of South Auckland's favourite artists including Young Sid and the Kila Kokonut Krew.
"Most people are really receptive to it and it's good to hear from people who want to present us in a positive light. "I love the place and the people. There are some ridiculous stories about the place that aren't entirely true."
