A five-tonne bitumen tank split inside a South Auckland factory this morning, and the substance is flowing outside the building.
The hot bitumen, thought to be around 140 degrees Celsius, has spread 15m by 25m inside the building, and 10m by 10m outside.
The Otara factory, called Thermakraft Industries, specialises in roof underlays and building material.
Firefighters were alerted to the incident at 9.49am and have requested back-up to deal with the spill.
The hazardous chemical unit has also been called.
It is unknown if any people were in the factory at the time of the spill.
