A road in rural south Auckland has reopened after a car crashed into a tree, killing one person and injuring the other.

The crash happened on North Road about five kilometres north of Clevedon in south Auckland, just before midday on Saturday.

The road was closed so the Serious Crash Unit could investigate the accident.

A police spokesman said the second occupant was treated for minor injuries at the scene and the road had reopened.

Investigations into the cause of the crash were ongoing.

Police thank motorists for following diversions.
