Kia ora koutou,

As we head into autumn, along with cooler weather and Easter treats to look forward to - it's also that time of year when colds and flus start to increase. And for many within our community a common cold quickly turns into something more serious due to the poorly insulated housing many South Aucklanders live in. This is confirmed by hospitalisation rates, as Maori and Pacific are twice as likely to need medical treatment for respiratory illnesses. With this in mind, it seems unwise for the Government to be winding down its insulation subsidy scheme, especially given that all rentals will be required to have ceiling and underfloor insulation by 1 July 2019. If you're a landlord or a tenant, make sure you investigate what subsidies you're eligible for at this website: energywise.govt.nz/funding-and-support. We can all play our part to ensuring our community can stay a bit healthier over winter. And let us know your own home heating tips at edmc@snl.co.nz so we can share these with everyone.

Nga mihi nui,

Justin
