A young family has made a quick escape after the living room of their Housing New Zealand unit went up in flames.
Three fire trucks were called to the property on Bairds Rd in Otara just before midday.
It took 12 fire fighters about five or 10 minutes to extinguish the blaze, which started in the living room, officer in charge Brad Harvey says.
"It was contained to the downstairs area but there was quite significant damage to the upstairs."
Four people, including a toddler, were seen leaving the property.
Mr Harvey says he isn't sure how many people live at the address.
It is yet to be established how the fire started, he says.
