Healthy kai at the marae is just one message being promoted to tackle health and obesity issues.
Manurewa Marae has introduced an eight-week health challenge that not only tackles weight loss but also addictions such as smoking and gambling.
The programme has kicked off successfully with more than 100 people joining to meet once a week and improve their lives.
"Each Wednesday session has a different topic," nutritionist Kahurangi Taylor says.
"It may be exercise, addictions, spiritual healing or nutrition. Last week was the nutrition session where the aim was to show whanau that it is possible to create delicious healthy food without breaking the bank."
It's hoped the programme will make Manurewa well-known for being home to the "healthy marae" - a big challenge in an environment "where food is hugely significant", she says.
To promote the message, experienced marae cooks are on-hand to show people a few tricks in the kitchen.
Mussel salsa, mini kebabs, chilli prawn crackers and steamed vegetables are some of the treats being taught.
