The driver of a car that collided with a train near Morrinsville has been taken to Waikato Hospital in a serious condition after being freed from the wreckage of his vehicle.
The collision happened at the intersection of Piako Rd and State Highway 26 shortly before 7pm.
A Fire Service spokesman said the driver had been "heavily trapped" before he was cut free.
Police said the driver was a 76-year-old man.
Northbound motorists are being diverted from SH26 onto Kuranui Road. This diversion was expected to be in place for some time while the police serious crash unit examined the scene, police said.
