The police armed offenders squad was called in to handle a domestic incident in Invercargill today.

Officers fired distraction devices into a Wilfrid St address at about 5pm before entering the property, where they found a loaded firearm.

Following further enquiries a 40-year-old Invercargill man was located at a Mary St address by police and taken into custody.

The man will appear in the Invercargill District Court on Monday to face a number of charges.
