A 17-year-old girl was left beaten on the outskirts of Opotiki after being dragged into a car by three women in the early hours of this morning.

Police responded to a reported kidnapping about 5am, in one of two serious incidents in the Bay of Plenty this morning.

The teenager appears to have been in an altercation with three adult females, who then pulled her into their vehicle, police said in a statement.

The attackers then allegedly drove her to a location outside the township and left her on the side of the road.

The victim suffered injuries to her face and body.

Police from Opotiki and Whakatane this morning located three adult females who are being spoken to.

Investigations will continue today.

Police are appealing for information from anyone who was moving around the township during the early hours of this morning.

In a separate incident, a 32-year-old woman was sexually assaulted during a home invasion burglary in Kawerau.

Police were called to the urban house at 5.18am.

The woman was asleep in her bedroom with other members of the household sleeping in an adjacent room when the man entered.

The man sexually assaulted the woman before being pulled off in a struggle.

He left and has not been found.

Police are investigating. The victim described the intruder as a male Maori perhaps in his 30s.
