A former Hutt International Boys School teacher has pleaded guilty to indecently assaulting a promising young cricket player he coached in the late 70s and early 80s.

A court in Wellington heard today that Kevin Fraser Keys, 59, told police that the offences happened at a time that he was "sexually confused".

In Wellington District Court Keys was told that jail was virtually inevitable but Judge Stephen Harrop agreed to get the reports needed for a sentence of home detention to be imposed. Keys is on bail until sentencing next month. He has no previous convictions, the court was told.

He pleaded guilty to two charges of indecent assault, one of them a representative charge covering what was alleged to be several incidents between the start of 1979 and the end of 1981 in Christchurch.

Sergeant Barney Soutar said Keys was a coach at the Lancaster Cricket Club in Christchurch when the victim was aged 12 to 14 years and a promising cricket player.

Keys became friendly with the boys family to the extent that he stayed with them for a short time and took the victim on sports trips.

Keys took photos of the boy naked, they shared a bath a number of times, and various sex acts were performed.
