A man is dead and three others seriously injured after an early morning car crash in Northland.

There were seven people in a Subaru car when it crashed off the road on a moderate 'S' bend on Pouto Road, Aoroa, Dargaville at 1.35am today.

The car landed on its roof in a deep ditch.

Police said a 22-year-old Dargaville man died at scene while three others were airlifted to Northland Base Hospital with serious injuries.

Three other men were taken by ambulance to Dargaville with moderate injuries.

Police said the weather was fine, road dry and traffic light at the time of the accident and that alcohol and speed were believed to be contributing factors.
