An 82-year-old man has been killed and four others have been injured in a head-on crash near Kuriwao, in the Clutha district, this afternoon.

The man was a front-seat passenger in a car which collided with a sport utility vehicle on State Highway One about 1.20pm, police said.

He died at the scene while the woman driver was taken to Dunedin Hospital.

Three of the four people in the SUV suffered moderate to serious injuries, police said. Two were flown by helicopter to Dunedin Hospital and one was taken to Clutha Health First Hospital.

The driver of the SUV was unscathed.
