A Rotorua businessman has pleaded guilty to shooting dead his friend during a deer hunting trip in September.

In the Rotorua District Court this afternoon Henry Worsp, 36, pleaded guilty to careless use of a firearm causing the death of James Dodds, 30, near Waikite Valley, south of Rotorua on September 7.

Worsp, an outdoor safety programme company director, and Dodds, a well known Rotorua adventure sports businessman, had gone hunting together early in the morning in the Paeroa Ranges and became separated before the fatal shot was fired.

Worsp climbed a high ridge to raise the alarm on his cellphone and then walked two kilometres to Te Kopia Road to meet police.

Due to bad weather conditions and rugged terrain Dodds' body was not able to be removed until the following morning.
More than 1000 mourners, including Worsp, attended Dodds' funeral.
