A 38-year-old Italian skydiver was killed while filming a paid tandem jump near Wanaka today.

Police said they were called to the scene, near Wanaka Airport, about 4pm.

Early indications were that the man had difficulties with both his main and reserve parachutes, and died when he hit the ground, police said.

The incident was witnessed by several members of the public, who had been offered support and counselling. No-one else was injured, they said.

Police and the Civil Aviation Authority are investigating and the death has been reported to the coroner.
