A 60-year-old Nelson man has been found guilty of sexually violating a teenage girl who looked upon him as a foster dad.

The man, who has name suppression, was found guilty by a jury in the Nelson District Court yesterday of six charges of sexual violation - including rape of the girl when she was 15.

The man was remanded in custody and will be sentenced on December 18.

He was found not guilty of lesser charges of sexual assault.

He pleaded guilty to a related charge of supplying the teenager with cannabis at the start of the trial. Other charges against the man were discharged during the trial when the girl clarified timings of when things happened.

The Crown said the complainant had been a friend of the family, in particular the accused's partner, for years.

She moved in with the family last year when she was 15 and looked upon the family as her second family.

The Crown said shortly after the teenager moved in the accused's partner got a new job at night.

The Crown said that the accused waited until his partner went to work and would give the complainant alcohol - ready-to-drink vodka drinks - and sometimes cannabis.

The girl could remember nothing from that night, but woke up in her bed the next morning feeling sore.

The girl turned 16 in the middle of the offending.

The defence had argued the man had not had sex with the girl when she was under age. There had been some sexual contact, but not until she was 16, and it was consensual.
