Police are investigating whether two cars were drag racing before a fatal crash in rural South Taranaki.

A 26-year-old New Plymouth man, who was the driver of one of the cars, is dead after the crash about 7.15pm yesterday at the intersection of Fairfield Rd and Beach Rd, near Hawera.

The two cars involved in the crash had been travelling in the same direction, heading south on Fairfield Rd, away from Hawera and towards the beach, Sergeant Lincoln McCrea of Hawera police said.

Speed and alcohol were believed to be factors in the crash.

It was possible one of the cars had just been overtaking the other, but that was thought to be unlikely.

The driver of the second vehicle was taken to hospital in a serious condition.

The police serious crash unit are investigating, and they are appealing for anyone who saw a dark blue Subaru and a light blue Holden Calais leaving any address on Fairfield Rd just after 7pm to contact Hawera Police or phone 0800 CRIMESTOPPERS.
