Six people were taken to Palmerston North Hospital today after a crash between a stationwagon and a four-wheel-drive towing a trailer.

The crash happened about 2pm at the intersection of Rongotea Rd and State Highway 1, between Sanson and Foxton.

Senior Constable John Green, of Bulls police, said the four people in the Nissan four-wheel-drive and the two in the Mitsubishi stationwagon were all able to get themselves free from the wreckage.

He said it appeared the car was travelling across State Highway 1 from Rongotea Rd towards Campion Rd when it collided with the northbound four-wheel-drive.

Mr Green said he was unsure about the severity of the injuries.

The four-wheel-drive was tipped onto its side and and came to rest about 50 metres from the intersection.

Belongings were seen strewn along the road.

The road remained open and fire and police staff controlled traffic as the scene was cleared.
