A man has been airlifted to hospital after his car flipped upside down near Nelson this morning.

Sergeant Wayne Corbett, of Nelson, said the driver was the sole occupant of the hatchback vehicle which left the road and flipped upside down on the Whangamoa Hill. He had been travelling from Nelson to Blenheim.

It was understood the accident occurred about 8am.

The man, in his fifties, had been conscious at the scene, with grazes to his head.

Speed did not appear to be a factor and it was unclear why the car left the road, Corbett said.

Two fire engines, ambulance and the Nelson Marlborough Rescue Helicopter had gone to the scene.

A section of State Highway 6, at Collins Valley, was closed for about 30 minutes.
