An "extremely dangerous and volatile" man who had been on the run from police since March was given bail today so his mum could look after his injured leg.

Patched gang member Andrew Phillip Peter Kiriona, 30, appeared in the Hamilton District Court on nine driving and methamphetamine-related charges.

He was only caught after he crashed a stolen motorcycle during a high speed chase in the early hours of Tuesday morning, which allegedly reached speeds of 170 kilometres an hour.

The pursuit went on for 61km and police had abandoned chase of the speeding criminal before they heard five minutes later he had crashed into a milk tanker in Rotorua.

There was only minor damage to the bike but Kiriona "virtually destroyed his left leg".

The heavily tattooed man wore a hospital gown in court and sat during his bail hearing.

Community magistrate Kathryn Wilson said hospital reports showed his injured leg was now three times the size of his right leg and surgeons had to wait for swelling to go down over the next three months before they could assess whether they could save the limb.

Defence counsel Louis Wilkins said though Kiriona had charges of failing to turn up to court dates, he had never breached bail and proffered a Taupiri address where his mother lived and could take care of him.

Police opposed his release and Ms Wilson acknowledged he was "flagged as being extremely dangerous and volatile".

However, she eventually granted Kiriona bail on 24-hour curfew unless he was at pre-approved hospital appointments.

There were also orders to not consume drugs or alcohol.

"Just stick to the drugs they've given you from hospital," Wilson said.

"And for goodness sake rest that leg; you don't want to lose it."
