One person is dead and another is in hospital being treated for shock following a head-on crash in Napier.

The 38-year-old driver of a Nissan ute died at the scene of the accident on the Hawke's Bay Expressway just south of Napier Airport this afternoon.

His car collided with a Kenworth logging truck after one of the vehicles appeared to have crossed the centre line, Sergeant Paul Ormerod of the Hawke's Bay road policing unit said.

The 38-year-old driver of the logging truck was taken to hospital to be treated for shock.

Emergency services were called to the crash at 1.22pm.
