A 19-month-old Tapawera girl is in hospital after being attacked by the family dog.

The girl, from Tapawera, was bitten on the forehead. She was treated by ambulance staff and flown by rescue helicopter to the Nelson hospital about 3pm.

St John team manager Jon Leach said the girl had a moderate to deep cut to her forehead.

He believed the family dog had struck out causing the injury.

He did not know what breed of dog it was.
