A 70-year-old man is dead after the car he was driving crashed into a Kaiapoi house shortly after midday.

The Sewell St house is unoccupied and is part of an area of red-zoned homes in the North Canterbury township.

The man's body has been removed following the crash into the Sewell St home at 12.25pm.

It appeared the car travelled across the lawn and through a plaster wall at the side of the house.

A St John spokesman said the man had been confirmed dead at the scene.

Police said the man was the sole occupant of the car and no other vehicle was involved. 

A police statement said "although it will be for the coroner to determine the cause of death, there are indications that a medical event may have been involved".

The man's identity is expected to be released later today.
