A man's body found in the Tauranga Harbour on Saturday has been identified.

Police say he was a 29-year-old from the city and they are working to contact his family. The man's name will not be released until the process is complete.

An autopsy will be a carried out later today to establish how the man died but police said it was too early to say if the death was suspicious.

Officers were alerted to the body near Mt Manganui Port about 2.50pm on Saturday, after it was spotted from a tug boat.

It was not clear how long the body was in the water, however it may have been one or two weeks, police said.
